Croquet at Castle Howard

In August 2019 the BBC held a four day live event at Castle Howard. As part of the entertainment they invited the Yorkshire Croquet Federation to set up a croquet lawn and offer introductory coaching sessions.

The full team of BBC presenters arrived on the lawns early doors on the first day. Dress code varied! Derek was the star of the show, guiding Anita Rani and Matt Baker round the hoops. Matt even returned later in the day with his children for another game. Angela, Sally, Graham and Debbie all worked shifts to coach the public visitors of which there were many - families, children and dogs included.

Annie joined Derek and Debbie for Day 3 on Saturday. We dealt with a muddy showground after Friday's deluge, but the lawns held up well. Wellies were definitely the way to go. Annie was the star of Saturday, coaching the BBC's Ellie Harrison round 6 hoops, with both players pulling off jump shots! Debbie tried hard to get Pudsey to visit the lawns but the bear let us down, pleading a busy timetable and an empty stomach. He seemed to prefer maypole dancing!

Thanks to all club members who committed their time to showcase croquet so successfully for the Yorkshire Federation. The shifts were long, but the public interest was high. A grand day out in a very grand setting.
